Harry has thrown in the towel, no more irksome royal duties for him, “enough is enough“, he says.
Where does Harry get his money?
95% of Harry’s income comes from the Prince of Wales. Harry received just over 5 million English pounds in 2018-19. The money comes from the Duchy of Cornwall, a vast portfolio of property and financial investments owned by Prince Charles, which brought in £21.6m last year.
The other 5% of income comes from the Sovereign Grant, money paid from the government to cover expenses for official duties. The grant is worth 82.4 million English pounds in this financial year.
These figures don’t include security costs, which are met separately.
Harry’s private wealth
Both the duke and duchess have considerable personal wealth. Princes William and Harry received 13 million English pounds left by their mother, Diana.
Prince Harry was also left millions of pounds by his great-grandmother, the Queen Mother.
Harry gives up 5%
Harry and Meghan say they will no longer receive funding through the Sovereign Grant, “thereby making them members of the Royal Family with financial independence”. However, the grant only provides 5% of their income. Not exactly financially independent.
But he’s looking to the future .. “I’m literally starting out with only 50 million quid and a cottage in Windsor to my name.” Harry said. But everyone has to go it alone at some point and earn a crust – we’ll struggle through.
First, Harry, how about repaying the 2.4 milliion pounds spent on a makeover for your cottage in Windsor?
